The modern meaning of the word "Paladin" is a heroic champion and strong supporter or defender of a cause. It derives from the Latin "palatinus", meaning "of the palace", and came to mean a warrior or knight. The 12 knights of Charlemagne were called Paladins, whose mission it was to resolve disputes between the king's subjects.
In the late 1950s, a character played by the actor Richard Boone was named Paladin. In the popular TV Western "Have Gun Will Travel", Paladin solved problems with intellect, not gunfire. The knight symbol on his business card conveyed his message of stoic service.
In current culture, Paladins are knights in Dungeons & Dragons, and various computer games. A Paladin stands firm in the battle against chaos and evil as a beacon of hope to all, crusading in the name of good and order.
